Try switching to a style other than Aero. It works for some people.

The program will run on Vista, with some tweaking. There's a couple things you should do: first, change the compatibility mode of the program to Windows XP, then, change the display settings in Vista from Aero to Classic. If the game still does not work properly after that, open up a .wmv file in Windows Media Player and then try running the game. That forces Vista out of Aero, which apparently causes all sorts of problems in the game.
If the above doesn't work, do tell us, we're trying to come up with a comprehensive Vista guide for Wanko to Kurasou.

I used to hang on the black screen as well on vista. However, one time I decided to watch some anime with the game window up and !!!!! the menu screen was working and I could play the game perfectly. Might not work for everyone, but play wanko while playing a video (i was using mpc). Just open up a video, pause it and minimize it and wanko should work just fine.
I love this game btw, i've been playing it japanese(my japanese sucks) til i found out there was a english patch!

The Vista problem is some sort of sound problem. While staring at the black screen of the game I did a speaker test and the game just kicked in. Having iTunes open with song paused also allows the game to run. It probably has something to do with what ever sound drivers were included with the game. I remember similar problems with a totally different game, Knights of the Old Republic II.

Hopefully after TakaJun is done patching the game into English, he'll have the Installer made to fix the Vista problems that are mention so far... I hope.

There will probably come with a brief FAQ telling users a variety of useful tidbits, including possible Vista fixes.
I'm guessing the company that made the Marble Engine will fix it eventually, assuming they're still alive. If they aren't, then, to fix the problem, we'd need the source code and a programmer experienced with resolving Vista incompatibilities. And that's not going to happen.

Here is how I make it work: (your kilometerage may vary, but it's definitively sound related)
Note: This is WAY easier if the game is set to run in windowed mode. (you can always switch back after)
1. Set the compatibility level of "WANKOENG.EXE" to "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)".
2. Run WANKOENG.EXE You'll get the black screen of death.
3. Play any sound repeatedly. The "Ivory" Logo will appear.
(My favorite method is to use the volume controls on the taskbar. Just open it up and click on the slider. It emits a tone every time you click on it.)
4. When the logo is done appearing, switch back to the game window and click in order to go to the title screen. Damn the game will probably freeze again.
5. Play more sounds until the title screen appears.
6. Voil?! The game works!

The video trick works like a charm. For me as long as I "play" any video, the game will start. All you have to do is get to the menu screen and then everything works fine, you can close the video at that point. If that doesn't work, watch some anime and pause it and it'll most likely work.

You don't need to set any compatibility options. I got it to work in Vista in Aero using the Volume Control trick. When the title screen appears, click End, Return to Title, then either Yes or No and the game will work.
There seems to be a problem in the exe itself. Something that can't be fixed easily.

Not sure if this will work for everyone, but I've tried this on three Notebooks, just open the game and go to settings, sound settings and use the voice check(voice button), it always manages to get the game running and it works even if I'm in Aero.

The problem most Vista users are having is that the game freezes BEFORE the title screen.

Once they manage to get there, the game works fine.

Yeah that's the main problem with most Visual Novels, they tend to be not Vista compatable at times. Well never the less at least there are ways to bypass that problem for now, even though it's nothing more then jimmy-riging it to work though.

The problem is easyly solved without tinkering with visual options or anythin similar to that. All you really need to do is open Windows Media Player before you start the game...
I believe it has something to do with Vista not runing the right codec packs at the time... so it just glitches out and "freezes" the game

I'm not running Aero but doing the voice check definitely runs the game for me.
