Why not listen to your favorite Characters?

Unread postby klonedesu1 » April 4th, 2008, 7:50 pm

After playing Windom for a while, I started to get a bit bored with the yelling of the cliche lines from those masculine Japanese kitties. So I decided to start adding characters that I would not mind hearing for hours on end. Since I just finished UBW on FS/N (Thanks for the patch guys!), I decided to grab my favorite character, Saber, and create her as a pilot (yeah, I know she has nothing to do with mecha anime lol).

First I plugged an extension cord into my computer with headphone jacks on both ends. I plugged one side into the "line in" jack and the other into the "line out" jack (basically I made the computer loop back into itself). After that I opened up the standard windows sound recorder along with FS/N(which which configured with the Effects and music volume to 0) and spent a few hours grabbing lines in the game that were appropriate for dmg, atk and what not.
Then I used nero wave editor to fix up the wav files (since some of them had unnecessary lines and there is a 40kb limit) and used oggdropXPd (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia ... pXPd.shtml) to encode the wav files into ogg files.
I think about 6hrs of time passed by the time I had my saber to blow away windoms with her Excalibur line lol.

I want to make a few more since 4 pilots isn't exactly a lot to choose from. I don't have a lot of good sound sources available so the only two I can think of right now are FS/N characters or characters from Melty Blood. I really want to grab some characters from mech anime like Code Geass but those have background music that would make the lines sound out of place.

Anywho, I know that some of you guys have started making original characters but I was wondering if anyone else has tried making any pilots from an anime/game or whatever. I noticed that we don't really have any English fan sites or anything for windom that share custom pilots yet (since mirror moon put out this ENG patch recently and all).

Here's the list of all the pilots that have been submitted to this thread so far. I'll try to at least keep it updated weekly. I just listed the creators in alphabetic order and listed their pilots in chronological order within the subcategory of what they came from.

For future reference, there's an easier way to record the sounds your computer is playing.

Simply go to Windows' Volume Control, and select
Options>Properties
Select "recording" instead of playback
Make sure the Stereo Mix checkbox is checked and hit OK.

Select Stereo Mix in this recording control, and tadaa~ even the Sound Recorder that came with windows will now record whatever files you play.

Alternatively, you can use a program called Audacity. (actually I'd recommend it) Not only is this option to record Stereo Mix built right in, but you can also conveniently trim the blank space around your sound samples and save them right into .ogg format.
To change your recording source, just look around the middle of the main toolbar. There's a dropdown box that says Microphone - just change it to Stereo Mix and you're set.

edit:
But on the note of blowing away people with Sabre... I'll be watching for when you have her uploaded!

lol yeah, I love it when she shouts "excalibur!" as I fire off a laser beam S_atk from the blackselena linux model xD

Thanks! That program seems very useful :D It'll be good to know that for next time. I can pull that cord out now lol. I made an account on the upload site. It just took me a little extra time trimming down a few files that I noticed were a tad over 40kb. If anyone finds mistakes on my readme or something like that please tell me. I made the readme for ENG and JAP... although I don't even know if people with the Japanese version can use the same pilots... but I hope they do! Gotta share some Saber with everyone

Many modern soundcard drivers let you simply record its line out without making a physical loop as you described. Some name's I've seen for this are 'stereo mix' and 'master'. Just select that as your recording device and dump into your favorite program. REmember to set your volume levels right. If you're really obsessive and your program supports it, record a few seconds of silence to make a noise profile, as most soundcards are quite noisy.

Oh god creative labs, such a piece of shit since the AWE32.

Ah. I don't have anything fancy. Just the realtek built-in card that came with my mobo. I tried doing a "silence profile" for the fun of it. The recording showed a few tiny movements of sound but it wasn't anything that I could really make out when I played it back. I guess I won't worry about that for now. Yeah, when I recorded the saber wavs I had my volume set decently high. I figured it's easier to adjust something high to be lower than the other way around. I think it turned out okay.
So creative labs cards aren't what they used to be now? I guess it was a good thing I held of on buying that one soundblaster card a few months ago.

I recently put together an Tohno Akiha pilot. Used voice rips from Melty Blood, but since i don't know Japanese I'm not sure if the quotes i used are accurate or in context.

OMG, thanks dude!I love it! Don't worry, the lines I heard were perfectly in context. ;) I was surprised since you made it sound like it was more random. Well done.

My favorate one is when she says 魂さえ残さない! (I won't even let your soul survive!) on s_atk4. It's especially awesome when the s-move kills the enemy as she says it xD

If you're going to try Melty Blood I think I'll just stick to FS/N. I want to try archer next. "Unlimited blade works!" lol.

Alrighty. If that's the case--here's a few things I noticed after looking through the sound files and clicking each one(as opposed to just from what I heard when playing). I don't mean to be mean or anything. I'm just mentioning these since you asked :)

1. atk1 and atk5 are the exact same sound. (Any of the lines from 2-3.ogg would replace this sound fine.)

2. destroy3 still works but is slightly out of context. (笑)捕まえた! means "I've caught you" or "I've captured you". It kinda works but feels out of place since the enemy is blown up lol. (I think it would work better as a s_atk line. The sound you used for 0.gg 立ちなさい軟弱物! "Stand up you weakling!" or 5.ogg それではご機嫌よう。 "Have a nice day." would work better and be funnier for destroy 3 anyway lol.)

3. I changed the pilot.txt name from Tohno Akiha to Akiha Tohno since the pilot's folder is "Akiha" and it wouldn't be in the correct alphabetic order in the in-game pilot selection (lol, yeah that one is dumb so go ahead and ignore it).

Btw. What's the point of the 1-6.ogg files anyway? You probably already noticed but I didn't make any for my saber pilot. Also, what's the point of the text file with the pilot lines? I created one for each sound but I don't see any text show up during gameplay. Is this just an issue I'm having or is it that the text just isn't showing up for everyone?

I found the purpose of the 1-6.ogg in the readme. I still think it's pointless though :P Unless someone specifically asks me to make 1-6 for the saber pilot I'm just going to leave it as-is and move on to archer :D

Should I ask the second question as a new topic?

If you make a 1.txt or atk1.txt, etc, it will say that text in the game chat. You name the txt the same as the ogg name you want to associate it with.

Nope. Turtle Beach is probably the best consumer sound cards.

Example: my Game Surround Fortissimo II (2001? something like that) accelerates sound better and makes less popping, clicks, and other shit than a soundblaster audigy.

Ah yeah, i figured atk1 and 5 where similar sounding and it was on my mind whether to change it or not, at first i didnt want to use one of the higher pitched attack sounds (because it gets annoying) but ill look through it again since you mentioned it.

and yeah.. i thought destroy 3 meant something like "caught you" or "got you". I don't know Japanese but i kinda have some vague understanding of some of it from anime and games lol.. (not confident in any of my understanding though). I figured it would be appropriate for a destroy clip since i thought that if you killed somebody, it means you broke past their defense or caught them with some attack. At first, it actually was an s_atk, but after testing it, i found out that pilots say the s_atk clips even if they miss... so it didn't quite fit.

But if you say it is a bit out of context, i could probably replace it with the "have a nice day" clip, because that makes sense to me also.

I haven't started on any other pilots yet, but i think i might do arc next.

Oh, and yeah, thanks for the pointers, appreciate it. As for 0-9.ogg and 0-9.txt -its for people that play online or over a network, the other voice clips (attacks, deaths, etc) won't be heard unless its enabled in the options. I think this is because of some lag issues, but by default only 0-9.ogg and txt will be transmitted to other players during in-game netplay. Mainly for the purposes of taunting and mocking people i think. Could also be used for praise i guess... but in my opinion its definitely stylish to comment on gameplay with a voice clip when appropriate. =P

Yup, no prob :) I'm glad I could be of use. Yeah, I just thought it might work better that way.

Crimson wrote:I haven't started on any other pilots yet, but i think i might do arc next.

Sweet! I will be looking forward to it :D It would be hilarious if you could make a neko-arc one lol. I guess that one would be a bit more tricky though since you can't (or at least I haven't figured out how to) select her as a character.

That explains it. I just figured out how to play online a few hours ago(thanks to firewall issues) and I've always had it set to the "only play 1-9" option. Since you put it that way,I can see how it would be fun to have the numbers enabled. I guess I'll try making the saber 0-9.ogg later. I want to at least start on archer first.
