Windom issues

Unread post by Seibaa » March 28th, 2008, 3:25 pm

I have problems launching the game, and I don't believe I'm the only one, so why not post your questions here?

So about the issue. When I try to launch the game, it gives me the following messages and crashes:
"Direct3D initialization failed" and "DirectGraphics initialization failed".

Any ideas?

Quite possibly the fact that you lack a file called d3dx9_32.dll.
You can find it if you look for it, and download it. then place in the windows\system folder.

Problem solved?

You may need a more modern videocard, or update your DirectX or videodrivers.

Not quite. Now I'm missing the setup screen as well...

nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS, DX March 08 and latest drivers for just about everything on the system. So I kinda doubt it.
I wonder if it's too modern.

Edit:
M'kay, it works. I installed it on the main C: drive, where the Windows' system files are. Quite a bother, since I have all my games on another partition of the drive and I like my hard drive organized. So meh.

Edit 2.0:
Forget the previous edit. Actually, the game won't launch if you have fullscreen ticked, but when it's set in windowed... Yeah. *epic sigh*

Read the readme.

When first running the game, some users may experience a lack of sound and/or
there was no game configuration menu.

To remedy this, perform the following steps:

1.) Right-click on WindomXP.EXE and select Properties.
2.) In the Properties Menu, choose the Compatibility Tab.
3.) Go to the Compatibility mode section.
4.) Click "Run this program in compatilibity mode for:" and choose Windows
2000 from the pull-down window and click "OK" at the bottom.

The next time WindomXP.EXE is run, a configuration menu should appear and
there should be sound during the game (default setting has the sound turned
all the way down).

On some Windows XP 64-bit systems, the selection and battle music cannot be
heard while playing. The cause for this problem is currently unknown.

If the game does not start, try updating to the version oflatest DirectX 9.0c
by using the web update available at the Microsoft website.

Well, since it seems this is the trouble shooting thread:

When opening WindomXP.exe:

"Cannot find MSVCR71.dll, due to this the program cannot execute. Reinstalling the program may solve this problem."

Any ideas? (Despite what the error suggests, reinstallation did absolutely nothing)

I can probably find and dl this file from the internet (as all .dlls are relatively easy to find), but I have no idea what folder it's supposed to go in (I'm guessing Windows32).

You need the MS Visual C++ Runtime. I think that's this one.

but there's something weird with the gamepad config. the buttons wont "keep" the config i give them on the launch screen

Try some lower quality video settings when you run the game.

I have the lowest video setting but still can't run the game... I'll post the problem in a new thread.

This seems to be a general help thread, which is good, considering my previous topic was deleted for no reason:

Even after setting the compatability, the config window used to slide sound, control config, and visual config won't appear. I don't get any error signs or anything, so I have no idea what's going on. Any help?

To further clarify, the config menu won't appear, even when changed to the correct settings(the ones detailed in the readme).

I am with the same problem that Fafnir.
The configuration screen does not appear and enters normally in the game, also followed all the recommendations of readme.
