How do you edit .xp3 files?

Unread postby Sepheriel » January 12th, 2009, 12:39 pm

I have an .xp3 file that I want to edit and by edit I mean I want to delete something in it. How can you gain access to do that because Susie will not let you do it. Thanks.

Hm... I don't know if it's okay to post that here, but use Insani's xp3tools.
Read the second post here to learn how to extract the data.

Inserting goes like this:
Code: Select all
xp3-repack.exe C:\PathToExtracted C:\PathTo.xp3

Don't forget to back up the *.xp3 file.

How do you repack the file so that fate/stay night can read it? Or even Susie with the f/sn plugin can read it. I repacked it but the images don't show up in Susie.

I can repack your files but why do you want to do that?

Because I am deleting a file from the uncensored patch that is screwed up. It has green blocks on it and lines and stuff. So I am unpacking the .xp3 file they are in, deleting that picture and then I want to repack them so the game can you them again. I just can't repack them right. I have the .bmp and .tlg files ready to go. At least I think I do.

did you all every get this working? I was trying to do something similar myself, and it seems like xp3tools doesn't play nice with all the pictures. It kinda messes with some of them, leaves a bunch of them alone, and totally borks the rest.

Is there another way of packing an xp3 file? I know krkr2 can do it, but it doesn't have the encryption for fate.

No, I always have green artefacts. Maybe we should ask to ArchDemon, because in the Liner Note, you could see that:

After working with
the files, I found out that the English beta patches created with the tools that
tjm made had no compression, so I decided to use the insani tools for packing them
instead. After a while we kept running into "crash" bugs and I had to keep making
workarounds for them. After releasing Fate, we found out that the edited graphics
had what we called the "blue smear effect".

As it turned out, this bug was actually caused by the insani tools due to
incomplete encryption, which was also the cause of the crash bugs in the translated
script (the incorrect encryption caused some script commands to be read
incorrectly). So I was back to using the tools that tjm made again. The bloated
patches bothered me, so I ended up devising a way to achieve correct encryption
with compression. It involved me first compressing the files using the insani tools
with no encryption, then extracting the files using the tools that tjm made (these
tools use a hexadecimal naming convention, so I couldn't just do a straight
compression of the files with them first), repack the files using those tools
(using the proper encryption), unpacking the files using the insani tools with the
incomplete F/sn decryption, then finally repacking the files with those tools using
the incomplete encryption.

The result was a file that both contained the correct encryption with significant
compression. Fixing the encryption fixed all of the blue smear problems on the
images, as well as all the crash bugs that were in the translated script. Since
such a procedure was time consuming, I made an auto-insertion script which
inserted, wrapped, packed, unpacked, repacked, decrypted and encrypted the files.

Yeah, it's a mess :p

tl:dr version: clusterfuck of encryption and compression.
