Playstation 3 question

Unread postby allanh » March 4th, 2009, 2:36 pm

I am looking for a Playstation 3 60gb NTSC/j (Japanese) version.

Does anyone know where I can buy one online? :(

I don't really mind second hand ones as long as it's in a good condition and from a trusted seller.

Looked in eBay but there are like only 2 left and 1 of them is faulty and the other one is 1300 AUD.... (which is about 800 USD).

play-asia.com and yesasia.com both don't have stock ><

Well, in times like this it is great to open a Japanese book convert some of your money to yen and take the next flight to Japan. Then buy one. Hey, working for about three years of searching or paying more when you can spend just as much for a trip than buying it online. Plus you get experience.

nah, Aussie dollar is so weak now that it is not funny.

Anyway, I have checked Japanese auction sites and most of them don't have PS3 60gb version anyway.

So no suggestions on any online shop where there might still be one available?

Sony stoped producing the 60GB one like year and a half ago iirc, add the fact that it is the one with the best BC of the bunch who offered it (thanks to the built in emotion engine[wiki it]). Take those facts into consideration, and the $800 are pretty justified (in a way  )

glad i bought mine within release year

Why do you especially need a Japanese version?? I don't think there's any difference between PS3 manufactured and sold at any country.... Unlike PS2, it's region free, right?? Well, unless I'm wrong tho...

I just want the NTSC/j version to play Japanese PS2 and PS1 games. I guess I can always mod-chip the PS2 PAL I just bought, but I prefer to run those games on PS3 and avoid modding the PS2

Well, I assume the version you asked got backward compatibility.. thing is, Sony no longer manufacture any PS3 with backward compatibility... maybe in the future... But if were you, I would prefer to mod the ps2... it enables you to play not only japanese, but games of any region.... and you already got the PS2 anyway...

I wouldn't wait for another ps3 model with hardware ps2 emulation to go in production again, much cheaper to get a ps2, it likely works better also :P

And though ps3 games are region free, the ps3 models with backwards compatibility are still region locked in regard to ps2 games, and there is no known way to mod them.

Next generation of consoles is expected to come out in 2011. I wonder if we'll have a ps4 with full backwards compatiblity...that would be godly.

And I heard, that PS2 compatibility has some issues. (There is only one, I know of though: Tales of the Abyss freezes at some point.)
So modding a PS2 might really be a better idea.

Just use a memory card exploit, that's how I play NTSCJ games. Only works for PS2 games, but it's easy to do. FMCB is my bestest friend.

I've only read about it, so it's not 100%, but the problem with "emulation" is, that it is not the original, so there is a possibility of bugs, glitches and other stuff. So if you want to play PS2 games, your best bet probably is a PS2, unless of course, you want to play PS3 games as well.
