What's Genuflect?

Unread postby ScorchingFalcon » December 4th, 2008, 7:35 pm

I've seen this in several VN translation (KT, Crimsoness and OMGWTFOTL to name a few) but what does it really mean?

I've been wondering about that myself, all i know is that it is Latin for "bending of the knee" though, that could mean a lot..

Leo translation:
eng: "to genuflect" --> ger: "niederknien"

Translated back into english it could mean: "to kneel down".

To use a pictograph you may or may not be familiar with;

genuflect is the equivalent of OTL or Orz

And for those who didn't get it the first time. (like me)

Wikipedia wrote:Orz (also seen as _| ̄|o, OTL, Or2, Orz, OTZ, O7Z, Sto, Jto, _no) is a Japanese emoticon representing a kneeling or bowing person, with the "o" being the head, the "r" being the arms and part of the body, and the "z" being part of the body and the legs. This stick figure represents failure and despair. It is also commonly (mis-)used for representing a great admiration for (sometimes with an overtone of sarcasm) someone else's view or action. ...

Wrong orz is basically someone that failed poorly, and not just for bowing as it seems that it's also taking that ideas now.

as for the Genuflect thingy it's just the "Retun to the Main Screen button" for Kagetsu Tohya. As for the others I honestly can't say since I haven't played them.

if Genuflect = OTL/Orz then I get it. Thanks ^^

If u still don't get it:
O = head
T = Arm and body
L =legs

so OTL would be a guy on all four bangin his head or something

OTL

We also have

OGC

Which basically is a guy pleasuring himself

Scary... I can actually see that...

Who's the sorry bloke that actually 'created' this one?
How long did the thought of 'pleasuring himself' caused him to see these three letters as.... pleasuring himself?

You're the one that's wrong.

Orz is originally a pictograph if a man bowing down. The "failing poorly" is only secondary associations that came after/being represented by the pictograph. This "failing poorly" is the idea that's being taken now, not the other way around. (i.e. WORDS mean something SECOND, and are composed of letters FIRST. Don't go ahead and say "Words seem to be a compilation of letters nowadays")

While Genuflect does serve as a return to main screen button in KT, that doesn't explain anything about what it means. If you're just content with that though, that's up to you. The translators of KT used it as a joke and allusion to OMGWTFOTL (see Al|together 2006), along with their other references and whatnot in the Easter eggs and daily msgs (Planetarian, Narcissu, etc), which you pretty obviously missed.

Although much discussion and headache and the ensuing confusion may have been saved if someone just looked up Genuflect in the dictionary.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/genuflect
(Yes, genuflection is, in its purest context, an act of worship)

@inferno:

OGC was created by a London advertising agency that was paid several thousands of dollars to come up with a logo for a new government agency (yes, OGC was the short form. I forgot the full name of the agency).

After much deliberation and a month (or more) worth of work, they came up with OGC. OGC-printed office pens, coffee mugs, et cetera were then made. It was on one of the pens that had OGC printed that one employee took one look at (since on a pen, OGC would be vertical) and laughed aloud and promptly shared the joke with other fellow employees. (To add to the hilarity, the font they used made the laughable image REALLY obvious)

This was quickly rectified by stopping the mass production of OGC paraphernalia and such items made their ways to internet auctions shortly thereafter.

There were many Internet articles about this at the time =X

You would think someone would actally look this up in the first pleace instead of asking about this. Besides I can only state what I have witnessed and overheard. Never the less it could be something as simple as what is explained in the dictionary for genuflect... unless we know what Japanese characters were used that got translated into that though then that may be another story all togeter.

Yeah, I looked it up, so stop jeering already.

But when it's used in VNs in a somewhat joking context can you believe that it means kneeling to worship?? Don't you immediately think that it have other internet-jargon meaning??

Please...

genuflect: it reflects an action that involves getting on both your knees, placing both your hands in front of you, and bringing your head into contact with the ground. whether that's an act of worship, of defeat, or of some other thing is for you to decide.
Whenever I go on, everyone leaves the Tsukihime forums. 'Cause I just fail like that.
