Post your PC start-up and shut down speed here

Unread postby ryujin » August 26th, 2008, 6:49 pm

I'm just curious on how fast or how long does your computer usually take to start-up and shut down.

Don't worry, we won't criticize them or anything. It's all good here. :D

Your computer specs is not required but you have the option to post them or not :) (D4rks0ul already made a thread about PC specs)

Okay, let's have a golden rule shall we...
-Use a stop watch or something that counts seconds / time accurately. (do not use your fingers :o )

On start-up:
-after turning on all of the power needed to run your PC, prepare your stop watch...
Press: Start, the moment you see your videocard bootscreen / bootscreen.
example: (taken from google)

Press: Stop, the moment you see your wallpaper and the start button.

Here's my wallpaper, it's actual size is 1440 x 900, and yes, my desktop is actually clean. :D

-Then record the time.

As for shut-down:
-after clicking the turn off button...

Press: Start, the moment you hear the turn off / shut down sound or whatever it's called.

Press: Stop, the moment your screen turns black...

-Then record the time.

As for my results...
Start-up: 30 seconds.
Shut down: 29 seconds.
(record in just one go, no need to record multiple sessions just for the average)

OS: Windows XP Pro

If you have any suggestions, I'm willing to hear them. :)

EDIT: I forgot to mention, if you don't mind, please post your OS (operating system) along with the time.

You forgot that some of us actually have more than one account, or have passwords at start up (therefore it does not log on automatically.

Just being specific, it's only the wall paper? My pc still needs to load for a while after that before it's work ready.

How about pausing the timer as soon as the log-in account shows up... and resuming after you've entered you're password? -> I think that's feasible. :o
Actually, I too have a log-in account (because of the .NET framework 2.0) [needed by soundforge] -> correct me if I'm wrong...

Windows XP:
Startup - 33 seconds
Shutdown - 21 seconds

Though like Einherjar mentioned, there's other stuff to load up after the wallpaper. You could probably add a good 15-20 seconds to the startup for loading background programs.

start up: 28 seconds
shut down: 35 seconds

I wonder why my shut down is longer... maybe it's because there are many processes being closed. :?

That's basically what's wrong here. My room-computer has booted in about 40 seconds. And it shut down in just 7. SEVEN.
I mean, jeez, I could use that speed for other things then just the shutdown process.
Candlejack, I wonder what hap

My start up time is 29 seconds, but my shut down time is almost never. I have to constantly hit shutdown, and even then it takes like 4 minutes. I blame Vista. I'm using a brand new laptop too.

We could have merged this one with the PC stats thread but whatever. This thread now exists and let's use it anyway.

Windows Vista PC
  • Bootloader to Logon screen - 20 seconds
  • Logon screen to Fully functional desktop - 5 seconds
  • Shutdown - approx. 40-60 seconds (i had to go to the CR while clocking it damnit.)

Windows XP (SharpE Shell)
  • Bootloader to Logon screen - 23 seconds
  • Logon screen to Fully functional desktop - 0-1.5 seconds
  • Shutdown - 7 seconds

Linux
  • Bootloader to Logon screen - 18 seconds
  • Logon screen to Fully functional desktop - 2 seconds (GNOME) 0.5 seconds (XFCE)
  • Logoff - instantaneous
  • Shutdown - 5-7 seconds

EDIT: I forgot the shutdown times.

Took me like 5 minutes to boot up today.
Basically it likes to freeze up randomly when booting up, and then I have to hold down the power button for 5 seconds, then wait 10 seconds before starting it up again.
But after only 5 minutes! It finally came up! And even internet was working this time :D

EDIT : Windows XP Pro, 2.8GHz P4 hyper 1024 ram
Shutdown time is about 15 - 30 seconds after the tone.
