The search for ATLAS

Unread postby zweiterversuch » May 11th, 2008, 10:57 am

Hello.

I am actually searching for a program called ATLAS.
it is a program that allows you to translate:

japanese to english
enlish to japanese.

If someone knows where I can buy/get it please let me know. I would be very thankful.

@ zwei:

Machine translation sucks. If you must use it, though, I'd suggest AGTH (Anime game text hooker) over ATLAS, as the quality from AGTH is much higher, IMHO.

well the Agth+Atlas combo is what I tried to do but it wasn't as helpful as I thought.
I think I will never know what happens (in detail) in Saya no Uta.

That Altas you posted has a very weird way to hold the world above his head. It could fall with the slightest wind.

Yeah, my bad on that.

I meant using AGTH with another text translator (it is compatible with several) because ATLAS quality is poor.

Well, I don't have AGTH on my computer anymore (ran out of compatible games that I can get my hands on), so I can't remember which one I used, but these will definitely help anyway:

Systran (google it):

This is awesome for Hiragana. All sentences with heavy hiragana that you have trouble understanding should be put through this translator. It does a MUCH better job than ATLAS. (However you'd have to do copy paste to use this. You can't hook this up with AGTH)

(Also, @ ATLAS: ATLAS is decent with Kanji, however, the quality goes WAY DOWN if the sentence is too long. If you see a really long sentence, translate it one part at a time (as separated by commas or other punctuation) and that will help you understand a lot better)

JWPce (http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/jwpce.html):

This is a very useful tool if you're learning Japanese, but even if you're not, it's still useful here.

It has VERY MANY useful functions, the two you'd be primarily interested in are the abilities to look up words in EDICT and ENAMDICT (The most complete and frequently updated Eng->Jap dictionary and Japanese names dictionary, respectively)

It also has an auto-detect clipboard function which should in theory work with AGTH (my friend says it does work), however I've never managed to get it working, for some reason.

For starters, you'll probably rely fairly heavily on JWPce and Systran, but after a while you'll get +5/+5 in understanding ATLAS gibberish and they won't be needed as much. It's still good practice to use them for most sentences, though, if you truly want to appreciate the writing and not just the gist.

Just curious, seeing you can apparently add external translation memories to ATLAS, are there any that'd be useful for reading visual novels?
