Trouble posting in fanfic section

Unread postby abscess » May 8th, 2008, 2:17 am

I don't know where to go or what to do to get this solved so I'm posting it here, sorry if this is not meant to be here.
I have a problem when trying to post a new topic in the fanfiction section. Whenever I click de "submit" button it goes straight to a "General Error" page.
Here, I'll copy what the browser shows me:

General Error

I am completely clueless of what this means or what to do. Some help would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ah, I've gotten those before. From what I understand, some special symbols and characters (such as the dash) are not recognized by the board. So, I tried to substitute those characters with something else; i.e., "--" for dash, "O" for the circle symbol, "=/=" for the 'not equaling' symbol, ect.

Try checking your work to see if you have something similar. If not, then maybe you should PM a moderator for help.

Thanks for reporting this. This is however a known problem and we are trying to solve it. The problem lies somewhere with adding new search terms etc to the database which fucks stuff up for some reason.

Yes, your best bet is to not post directly from a something like Microsoft Word, but to export it as a text file with Euro encoding and substitute characters. It should post fine then.

I think it has something to do with the DB encoding, as we didn't have this issue before we moved to this SQL server.

Perhaps upgrading the forum software to 3.0 would solve that? :P

no, but it would create a number of other headaches, like unnecessarily complicated user administration. ITs like going from Windows NT type admin style, to Win2k server.... when you only need Windows NT style. Except you can actually manage a simple network in active directory, where as in php BB 3.0, you cannot. If it wasn't for that, and possible breaking the rather heavily customized posting system, I'd prob have migrated already. When i get more gumption, perhaps we'll look into it again... -_-

Umm... I just noticed this thread did got posted since I stayed away from the forum for about four days or so. I got another error message when I tried to post this thread so I didn't know of it's existance.

Something weird happend. What I was trying to post was a fanfic and after I tried (I don't know how many times) I always got an error, but I just checked and it seems the topic got posted but multiple times (I just went there and deleted the extra ones, so I don't think there is a need to worry about the multi-posting thingie).

I do thank you for the attention you pay to this problem.

Yeah... I thought that too. I was copy-pasting from an OpenOffice Writer and then tried to use Notepad as a bridge but got the same problem, or that's what it seems. Thanks for the word of advice from you guys.
