Seeking VN recommendations

I'm running low on VNs to go through so I'm posting this to ask you guys if you could recommend ANY visual novel or adventure novel out there, ero or not, that has a good storyline and is already translated or being translated (have I said earlier that I am capable of reading 0% japanese?). By good storyline I mean something that keeps me interested, maybe not as Tsukihime and Utawarerumono (damn! I loved that game! except the ero-scenes, I found them... lacking) did, but NOT something that is the typical "you have n-lolis/girls/women /insert-something-here to choose from and the plot involves getting to know them and thats it, enjoy yourself". If it's not too much to ask, please post a short synopsis of the story and, if you can, where can I get the patch (is this question considered asking for warez???). I thank you very much for helping me get out of this boredom.

If you consider important my likings, they are pretty broad, ranging from fantasy to sci-fi, going through horror and slice-of-life. To sum it up, anything that is good written.

P.S: If you could happen to say why you found that game interesting I'd be grateful too. Thanks in advance.

Simple answer: Ever 17.

Summary shamelessly stolen from Archonia.com (I'm lazy like that):
It is May 1, 2017, 12:51 p.m.

Seven people find themselves trapped without warning in the marine theme park LeMU, 167 feet underwater. Water, air and food are in short supply, and worse yet, a mysterious virus lurks deep in the ocean. The park is relentlessly assaulted by water pressure, and the protective bulkhead will collapse in the next 119 hours.

Time is limited for the people trapped in LeMU. Asthey fight to escape, the bonds between them grow stronger - bonds of friendship, and bonds of love. But time waits for no one, and your time is close to running out. With an ending that packs the ultimate surprises, what will happen to you? What will you gain when you finally discover the secret of LeMU? And what will you lose?
Porn free (ok, technically speaking not completely true) but has one hell of a story which will make you shit bricks more than once. Great voice-acting too. (Asakawa Yuu <3)

The best part is that the initial 4 routes don't explain that much and in fact leave you with more questions than answers. It isn't until you unlock the fifth, "true", route that the game reaches it's peak, but that's not to say the other 4 routes suck. On the contrary.

Only problem is that Hirameki rushed the translation and it's full of typos in certain parts, but nothing I couldn't handle.

@Henduluin
Hmmm... You seem to have liked Ever 17 a lot since you recommended it twice. I'll give it a try after I get my hands on it.
@ayadew
I read the other thread, thanks but most of those seem to be the typical jRPGs (right now I can only remember Castle Fantasia) I'm tired of at this moment... sorry.
@s3raph1m
I read about Kana Imouto a while ago and am interesetd, but I've never found it on sale (although I've never looked for it that hard either) but the incest thing gives the creeps too so I have some mixed feelings about it. There is a page that has some nice info about it called "kana's left kidney" or something along those lines that you may find interesting. I think I got there from wikipedia but I'm not sure.

Right now I'm looking for stories that aren't the "Yay! We have ages ranging from 12 to 17! Let's save the world with the power of love/friendship/[some variation]" type. I may seem a little picky... and, well, yeh I think I am... but I rather have some stories with original plots, sorry. Don't get me wrong I still am looking forward for your other recommendations. Thanks again.

If you want original, try Divi Dead, "original" doesn't equal to "good" sadly. But it has its moments.

Too many people seem to have liked ever 17 ... maybe i should play it but it having no h scenes means I wont ever be bothered enough to play it :P

Believe me, Ever 17 doesn't need H-scenes. Then again, no visual novel should *need* them to begin with.

I second Divi Dead for the story, although the translation does have a lot of "huh?" moments.

Kana little sister is vastly overrated.

Divi dead is simply terrible. Couldn't understand half of what's going on, and the gameplay's the most boring thing you'll ever sit through.

Crescendo is very very good.

Ever17 is godly.

Tsukihime is very good.

Of the translated VNs, you'll want to play those and probably nothing else. There's nothing else out there worth the money or the bandwidth.

Hmm... Crescendo... I've heard that name somewhere before. Why is it that good?

Well the thing to do is to read a few reviews.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin ... 17763.html

I don't think I can say much that hasn't already been said. :wink:

Tsk, tsk...

Anyway, Divi Dead isn't too much harder to understand than Nasu. Both have a thing for overusing made-up terms that mean absolutely nothing to the player. The gameplay warning is true enough, though... it's one of those games where you basically keep roaming the map, visiting every location until you find the next scene.

EVE Burst Error is another one that uses a similar mechanic, but has a much more comprehensible story. Check it out.

Kana is a fairly standard tragic story. It's good for what it's worth, but odds are that you've already heard it somewhere before.

Crescendo is an assortment of also-recognizable romance situations, featuring the main character working out his feelings about some of the people in his life during the week before his high school graduation. Naturally, all of the females also have issues of their own to work out, and the story is largely one of reconciliation and healing from the mistakes they've made in the past. It plays its emotions very well, effectively capturing the end-of-the-year feelings of mixed sadness and anticipation. And it doesn't ruin things by going over the top with sex or out-of-place humor, which is also a plus.

Plus, any game that successfully incorporates Scott Joplin music = win.

I loved Snow Sakura..

I donno about you guys... But comedy is ranked one of the highest factors in my VN ratings and Snow Sakura thoroughly deserve it...
Storyline is also good.. if you're into the kind of 'true love' romance story...

Basically its a story about a Tokyo-boy sent to his uncle's place in freezing Hokaido, where there is a sacred Sakura tree that only blooms during the Winter, for about 2000 years.. There he befriends with new friends... And meets with the 'true' love of his life. Finding that the simple life is much more enjoyable...

@pukka/ayadew
I have never heard of Narcissu before (that or I'm suffering once more problems with my memory). Why is "the best VN ever made"? Is the story any interesting?

@inferno_flamex
Snow Sakura has been mentioned before, but at this moment I'm not really interested in getting into "True Love" stories. That doesn't mean that in a later time I won't check it out, but just not right now. Thanks for the recommendation anyway. Why did you like it that much, by the way?

@rubberchicken
A friend of mine once lent me Divi Dead a long, long LOOOOOOOONG time ago... That was still (I think) when I had this uber-crappy PC and couldn't play it nicely, so I gave it back. After that some time passed and I never saw the guy again and I have never saw that game on sale.
I once heard about EVE Burst Error, a long time ago too, but I heard that it was translated "professionaly" and the sex scenes got cut-out. It's not like I'm playing VNs for the sex scenes, but I HATE it when someone edits the content (any kind of content) of something, be it a game, movie or novel and feel like I have an incomplete product so I never got it. Is it true that it was edited?
I never heard about Kana. What is it about?
If Crescendo is what you say then I'm not particularly interested in this moment. If it is a "n lolis/women/girls/whatever whom you fuck/makeLOVE/shag/some-verb-here without an interesting situation to keep the story going, besides character development" kinda game, then I'll pass. maybe later. I read one of the links posted by miraploy with reviews (thanks for them) of Crescendo and it seems it's that type of game...

I have decided to try Ever-17, since everyone seems to have it in so a high regard, when I happen to get it, something that I don't know when will happen... BUT IT WILL!!! some time... perhaps...

What other games do you recommend?

http://narcissu.insani.org/down.html

It's free, so just download.
Well, it's the only story that has made me really cry, and felt emotionally unstable for days after.
Very beautiful and very sad. And very good music.
It's not very long, 3 hours maybe.. so read it when you can be undisturbed and feel openminded.

People have written essays to describe the ownage of this VN, but it feels very wasted for me to try, since it is very dependant on what relation you decide to have to it.

Uuuuuh! I read the story seciton in the homepage, a tragedy! That's something that I was looking for! Thanks, man! I'll read it today since I seem to have the time, if not, there is always tomorrow (until I die, that is).
